In the third section, sixth segment of Short 2 in preparation for the second upward block and vertical middle finger fist strike, I have been taught to move the right foot toward (what was originally) 3 o'clock as you pivot 180 degrees and execute the block-strike combination.

Do you execute this maneuver in the same way?

Why do we execute the maneuver in this way? It appears at first glance to violate the basic concept of the 180 degree cover we learned in Short 1.

Thoughts?

This is an old topic but one that is always worth reexamining. There was an article contained in the September 2008 issue of “Black Belt Magazine” titled "Grounded in Reality" by Bakari Akil II, Ph.D. The article is the synopsis of, what I believe is, the first scientific study to test the widely professed postulate that "90 to 95% of all fights go to the ground".

The study examines 300 violent physical encounters involving 600 combatants. And while in no wise definitive, some of the interesting facts that the study revealed are:

1. Both fighters ended up on the ground only 42% of the time.
2. One fighter ended up on the ground 72% of the time.
3. The first person to hit the ground lost the encounter 59% of the time.
4. There is no discernable victor 33% of the time.

This was an exploratory study and more research is required to provide conclusive data, however, the initial findings are clearly indicative...stay on your feet.

It has been discussed on this forum before whether or not there are "master key techniques" in the kenpo system. Reading what Doc wrote made alot of sense to me and I started to look at the list of techniques and what spawned what so to speak.

Then I got to thinking about what really is a "master key". To me a master key is something that opens the way for everything else. I thought I would throw out my idea and conclusions. I think that all of the master keys to open up all of the self-defense techniques and be able to make them work are contained in Short form 1, Long form 1, Short form 2, Long form 2, and Short form 3.

These forms teach you all of the basic ideas to make all of the later techniques work. In the forms you learn how to move in proper stance, how to change angles and direction while staying protected so you can address an attacker at any angle. You are taught the keys to moving while blocking, you are taught how to move into an attack and how to do so safely. You are taught how to move in and out while punching. How to close the gap with an opponent. You are also taught (if needed) the lethal/maiming techniques and joint breaks and locks. They teach you the idea of continuing your attack through circles and rebounding. How to use lower and upper body attacks together. Short form 3 teaches you how to survive and counter all of the basic types of grappling attacks from an opponent. There are other things as well, just these come to mind first for me.

I do believe that the s-d techniques have their own concepts etc. and still are neded for more advanced ideas and study. But, I feel that if a student mastered all of the material in these beginning forms, that would be all they need for almost all situations.

Thoughts? Do you think that like other chinese forms, that the kenpo forms hold the keys?

I'm baaaack. LOL!

I started to put this in the General Kenpo section, but then thunk that perhaps if other stylists read here, it might be fun to get their answers as well.

I understand that we, most particularly in Kenpo, tend to teach the basic techniques as we learned them. As most of you know, I spent a great deal of my life in the Traco/Tracy side of things and "recently" began working in American Kenpo under Mr. Dennis Conatser and as nearly as I could, considering the circumstances I've had, Doc's incredible SL-4.

With those types of backgrounds, plus the other time I've invested in things like various schools of "Kung fu", up to and including a Tibetan style, I know my personal art has changed considerably over the years. Yes I still teach the techniques as I understand them, but I "fight" in an almost totally differen manner.

For instance, my blocking patterns are different, due mainly, I think to my size and musculature and addition of Doc's training material. My stepping patterns are changed due to Doc's inclusion of Bams and Pams. My striking is different due to the addition of arcs and circles and so forth from my other "Kung fu" training and the immortal Dr. Dave, who I wish would continue to publish his work when he gets time. My style fits me well enough. I've become very comfortable with the differences, and make them work well. Factually, it's hard to really separate which influence has influenced what. These are simply generalities.

I thought to go into detail, but I don't want this to be a technical comparison between Sigung86's methods and everyone elses. Just kind of looking to see how your general experiences and personal training have made you over so that you may not, actually, perform your personal art the way you teach your base art.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Saintly Unca Dan is just looking for more validation, or evidence that he needs professional help. :viking:
